Block Paved Driveway Thornton-Cleveleys | Stoneset NW

A driveway can look fine on the surface while hiding major problems underneath. That was exactly the case with this recent block paved driveway project we completed in Thornton-Cleveleys.

The existing driveway had been laid with very little proper preparation beneath it. In fact, much of the old block paving had effectively been installed directly over soil. That may provide a temporary finish, but it is not the kind of base that gives a driveway the strength and stability it needs for long term use.

For this project, we removed the existing block paving, carried out a full excavation, installed the correct foundation materials, and prepared the area properly before laying the new driveway.

The difference between a driveway that simply looks good and one that performs well for years often comes down to what is happening below the surface.

Removing the Existing Block Paved Driveway

The first stage of this Thornton-Cleveleys driveway project was to remove the old block paving.

Once the existing blocks were lifted, the problems underneath became clear. The previous driveway had very little structural base and much of the paving had essentially been installed on top of soil.

Block paving needs a strong and stable foundation. Without one, movement can occur as the ground settles or becomes wet. Over time, this can lead to sunken areas, uneven blocks and dips across the driveway.

Rather than attempting to repair individual sections, the correct solution was to remove the old installation and start again.

This allowed us to prepare the whole driveway properly and create a foundation suitable for the new block paved surface.

Full Driveway Excavation

After removing the original driveway, we carried out a full dig off.

Excavation is one of the most important parts of a professional driveway installation because it allows enough depth for the correct sub base and laying materials to be installed.

Simply laying new blocks over an unsuitable existing surface can result in problems returning very quickly. A quality driveway needs to be constructed from the ground upwards.

During the excavation stage, unsuitable material was removed and the area was prepared to the correct levels.

This gave us a clean starting point for the installation of the new driveway foundation.

Installing a Strong MOT Sub Base

Once excavation was complete, the next stage was the installation of the MOT sub base.

The sub base provides the strength beneath the finished driveway and helps spread the load from vehicles across the surface.

For a block paved driveway, this layer is extremely important. Cars and vans place significant weight on relatively small areas of the paving. Without sufficient support underneath, the surface can begin to move or sink.

The MOT material was installed and compacted carefully to create a firm and stable foundation.

Although homeowners will never see this layer once the driveway is finished, it is one of the most important parts of the entire installation.

Good driveway construction is often about getting the parts nobody sees absolutely right.

Preparing the Driveway with 6mm Limestone

After the MOT sub base had been installed and compacted, we introduced a layer of 6mm limestone.

This created the next stage of preparation before the new paving blocks were installed.

The limestone allows the finished block paving to be laid accurately while helping us achieve the correct levels across the driveway.

Careful preparation at this stage is essential. A block paved surface should feel even underfoot and provide a clean, consistent appearance across the full area.

Correct levels also help manage surface water and prevent unwanted low spots from developing.

By taking the time to prepare the base properly, we were able to create the ideal foundation for the new block paving.

Why Driveway Groundwork Matters

When people look at a new driveway, the first thing they usually notice is the paving itself.

Colour, pattern, borders and the overall finish are important, but the groundwork beneath the driveway is what determines how well the installation will perform in the years ahead.

Poor preparation can lead to several common driveway problems.

Blocks may begin to move. Sections can sink. Water may collect in low areas. The surface can become uneven and the appearance of the driveway can quickly deteriorate.

Correct groundwork reduces the risk of these issues.

A properly excavated driveway with a suitable compacted base provides far greater stability and gives the paving the support it needs.

This Thornton-Cleveleys project demonstrated exactly why shortcuts during the preparation stage are rarely worthwhile.

The Benefits of Block Paving

Block paving remains a popular choice for driveways because it combines durability with plenty of design flexibility.

Different block colours, styles and laying patterns can be used to complement the appearance of a property. Borders can also be introduced to define the edges of the driveway and add contrast to the main paved area.

Block paving is also practical.

Individual blocks can be replaced if necessary without having to remove the entire driveway surface. When properly installed and maintained, a block paved driveway can provide a smart entrance to a property for many years.

For this home in Thornton-Cleveleys, replacing the poorly installed existing driveway created an opportunity to rebuild the area properly and produce a much stronger finished surface.

Improving the Appearance of the Property

A driveway forms a large part of the front of many homes, so its condition can have a major impact on the overall appearance of the property.

A tired, sunken or uneven driveway can make the whole exterior feel neglected.

A newly installed block paved driveway creates a much cleaner first impression.

It can help define the entrance to the property, improve kerb appeal and make the area feel more organised.

However, achieving that appearance is not simply about installing attractive paving blocks. It requires careful excavation, preparation and installation from start to finish.

Professional Block Paving in Thornton-Cleveleys

This block paved driveway project in Thornton-Cleveleys is a perfect example of why proper groundwork should never be overlooked.

The previous driveway had been installed on an inadequate foundation, with sections effectively sitting over soil.

We removed the old paving, fully excavated the area and rebuilt the driveway correctly using an MOT sub base followed by 6mm limestone preparation.

Only once the correct foundation was in place was the area ready for the new block paving.

The result is a driveway that has not simply been refreshed on the surface. It has been properly reconstructed from the ground up.

For homeowners considering a new block paved driveway in Thornton-Cleveleys, investing in proper preparation is one of the most important decisions you can make. A quality driveway starts beneath the blocks, and getting that groundwork right provides the foundation for a strong, attractive and long lasting finish. Contact us today for a FREE QUOTE
