Resin Driveways and Paths in Preston for a Smart Modern Finish

A well designed exterior can make a huge difference to the way a property looks and feels. For many homeowners, the driveway and pathways are some of the first things people notice, so choosing the right surface is an important decision. Resin surfacing has become one of the most popular options for homes in Preston because it offers a clean modern finish, excellent durability, and a practical low maintenance solution for everyday use.

Resin driveways and paths are ideal for homeowners who want to improve kerb appeal while also investing in a surface that is built to last. The smooth and seamless appearance creates an immediate visual impact, helping the front or rear of a property feel more polished and well presented. At the same time, resin is highly practical, making it suitable for busy households that need a surface capable of handling regular use in all seasons.

Why Resin Surfacing Is So Popular

One of the biggest reasons resin has become so popular is its ability to combine appearance with performance. A resin driveway or pathway looks sleek and contemporary, yet it is also strong enough to cope with daily wear from foot traffic and vehicles. This makes it a reliable choice for homeowners who want more than just a decorative finish.

Resin also provides a more refined look than many traditional surfaces. Instead of loose materials or uneven sections, it creates a neat and consistent appearance that instantly lifts the outside of a property. This is one of the main reasons so many homeowners now choose resin when upgrading a driveway, entrance path, or surrounding outdoor area.

A Modern Surface That Improves Kerb Appeal

First impressions matter, and the surface at the front of a home plays a major role in overall kerb appeal. A tired driveway or worn pathway can make a property look dated, while a newly installed resin surface can give the entire exterior a fresh and modern feel.

Resin works especially well on homes where the aim is to create a clean and attractive entrance. It complements a wide range of property styles and can help connect the driveway, pathways, and surrounding landscaping into one coordinated design. The result is an outdoor space that feels more complete and much better presented.

For homeowners in Preston, this can be a particularly worthwhile investment because it improves everyday practicality while also enhancing the visual value of the property.

Low Maintenance and Built for Everyday Life

Another major benefit of resin driveways and paths is how easy they are to maintain. Unlike some traditional surfaces, resin does not leave you constantly dealing with loose stones, heavy weed growth, or an untidy finish. With occasional cleaning and general care, it can continue to look smart for years.

This low maintenance quality is one of the key reasons resin is such a strong choice for modern households. Homeowners often want outdoor surfaces that look impressive without creating extra work. Resin provides exactly that balance, making it ideal for busy families and anyone who wants a long lasting solution without ongoing hassle.

Because it is designed for practical daily use, it works equally well for a front driveway, side access path, garden walkway, or a combination of all three.

Resin Paths That Connect the Whole Outdoor Space

While resin is often chosen for driveways, it is also an excellent option for garden and side paths. Pathways can easily be overlooked in an outdoor design, yet they play an important role in how a space functions and how it looks as a whole.

A resin path creates a smooth and attractive route through the garden or around the side of a property, helping tie the different areas together. When the same material is used across the driveway and paths, the entire outside space can feel more unified and considered. This is especially effective in homes where the goal is to create a smart modern finish from front to back.

The Importance of Proper Preparation

As with any surfacing project, the quality of the finished result depends heavily on the groundwork underneath. A resin driveway or pathway needs the right preparation, the right base, and careful installation to ensure strength, stability, and long term performance.

This stage is often the difference between a surface that simply looks good when first installed and one that continues to perform well year after year. Proper preparation helps the resin sit evenly, drain correctly, and maintain its appearance over time. It also supports the durability that homeowners expect from a premium outdoor surface.

That is why professional installation matters so much. A resin surface should not only look impressive on day one, but also continue to deliver a practical and reliable finish well into the future.

A Strong Choice for Homes in Preston

For properties in Preston, resin driveways and paths are a smart choice because they suit both the style of modern homes and the demands of daily use. They offer a clean look, a durable surface, and a low maintenance alternative to more traditional options. Whether part of a wider landscaping project or a standalone improvement, resin can make a noticeable difference to the appearance and usability of the outside space.

Homeowners who want to invest in a surface that feels contemporary, performs well, and enhances the overall presentation of their property often find that resin is one of the best options available. It is practical, attractive, and designed to provide long term value.

A Stylish Finish with Lasting Benefits

Resin driveways and paths continue to grow in popularity for good reason. They offer a combination of style, durability, and everyday practicality that is difficult to match. From improving kerb appeal to creating low maintenance pathways and entrances, resin surfacing helps homeowners make the most of their outdoor space.

For anyone looking to upgrade the exterior of a property in Preston, resin remains a modern and dependable solution that can completely transform the look and feel of the home.

Stoneset NW highlights paving and natural stone as one of its core services and notes that these surfaces remain one of the most popular options for enhancing outdoor spaces.

Why Natural Stone Paving Remains So Popular

One of the main reasons homeowners continue to choose natural stone paving is its balance of visual appeal and long term durability. A surface needs to do more than simply look smart when it is first installed. It needs to cope with daily use, changing weather and the demands of modern family life. Natural stone is well suited to this because it has a strong and solid feel underfoot while also offering the kind of finish that adds value to a property.

The lasting appeal of natural stone is also linked to its versatility. Some homeowners want a more traditional patio area that feels warm and established, while others prefer a sleek and contemporary layout that complements modern fencing, clean borders and structured planting. Stoneset NW states that its paving service is suitable for both traditional charm and clean contemporary layouts, which makes it a strong choice for a wide range of outdoor designs.

Creating Better Outdoor Living Space

Outdoor spaces are now expected to do more than ever before. A paved area can be used for dining, entertaining, relaxing or simply creating a neat and practical connection between different parts of the garden. With the right design and installation, natural stone paving can make an outdoor area feel far more organised and usable throughout the year.

A well laid patio or pathway can also improve the overall flow of a garden. It helps define where people walk, where they gather and how the outdoor space connects back to the home itself. When paving is chosen carefully, it becomes more than a surface. It becomes part of the overall design of the property. This is why premium materials and professional workmanship matter so much in a landscaping project.

The Importance of Proper Ground Preparation

The quality of any paving installation depends heavily on the work that takes place beneath the surface. While the finished stone may be the most visible part of the project, the sub base, levels and drainage are what determine how well the paving performs over time. Stoneset NW notes that each paving installation is built on a fully prepared and compacted base to provide long term strength and stability.

This part of the process is essential because poor preparation can lead to movement, uneven areas and premature wear. A professionally installed natural stone surface should feel solid, look level and remain durable for years to come. For homeowners in Preston, investing in proper preparation is just as important as choosing the paving itself. It is what helps turn a good looking project into one that genuinely lasts.

A Choice of Quality Materials

Another reason natural stone paving is such a strong option is the range of materials available. Stoneset NW says it works with quality paving products including Indian sandstone, porcelain slabs, granite and block paving, allowing homeowners to choose a finish that suits both the property and the intended use of the space.

This variety means an outdoor area can be tailored to suit the style of the home. Some surfaces create a softer and more natural look, while others deliver a sharper and more contemporary finish. The right material can influence the mood of the whole garden, helping it feel either more traditional, more modern, or somewhere in between. This flexibility is one of the biggest strengths of paving and natural stone when compared with more limited surfacing options.

A Long Term Investment for Preston Homes

For many homeowners, a garden or patio improvement is about more than appearance alone. It is also about making the most of the property and creating an exterior space that adds genuine value. Natural stone paving can help achieve that by combining durability, style and practicality in one installation.

Because it is hard wearing and visually appealing, natural stone can continue to enhance a home for many years after installation. It suits family gardens, formal patio areas and front of property improvements alike. When paired with thoughtful design and professional workmanship, it offers the kind of result that feels complete, polished and built for everyday use.

For homeowners in Preston who want a surface that looks elegant while standing up to regular use, natural stone remains one of the best choices available. Why Natural Stone Paving Is a Timeless Choice for Homes in Preston

When it comes to improving an outdoor space, few features offer the same balance of style, durability, and long term value as natural stone paving. For homeowners in Preston, a well designed paved area can completely change the way a garden, patio, pathway, or driveway looks and feels. It creates structure, improves usability, and adds a finish that works beautifully with both traditional and modern properties.

Natural stone continues to be one of the most popular choices for exterior landscaping because it delivers a premium appearance without feeling overly artificial or harsh. It brings texture, character, and a sense of quality to outdoor spaces, making it ideal for homeowners who want a surface that not only performs well but also enhances the overall look of the property.

The Lasting Appeal of Natural Stone Paving

One of the biggest reasons natural stone paving remains so popular is its timeless appearance. Trends in outdoor design come and go, but natural materials continue to hold their appeal year after year. Stone paving has a classic quality that suits a wide range of homes, from period properties to more contemporary builds.

Each stone has its own natural variation in colour, tone, and texture, which helps create a more individual look. Rather than appearing flat or uniform, the finished surface has depth and character. This makes natural stone especially effective in patios and landscaped garden spaces where the goal is to create an inviting and high quality environment.

For many homeowners in Preston, natural stone is not simply a practical choice. It is also a design decision that helps elevate the entire exterior of the home.

A Practical Surface for Everyday Living

Good paving should do more than look attractive. It should also stand up to the demands of day to day life. Natural stone paving is well suited to busy households because it offers a robust and hard wearing surface that can cope with regular foot traffic, garden furniture, and changing weather conditions.

In the North West, outdoor surfaces need to be able to handle rain, cold temperatures, and general wear throughout the year. A professionally installed stone paved area provides the strength and stability needed for long term performance. With the correct preparation beneath the surface, it can remain secure, practical, and visually appealing for many years.

This makes natural stone a strong option for patios, paths, seating areas, and other outdoor spaces where reliability matters just as much as appearance.

Enhancing Outdoor Spaces with Better Design

A thoughtfully paved space can completely improve the layout of a garden. It helps define how different areas are used and can make an outdoor space feel more organised, more attractive, and easier to enjoy. Natural stone is especially effective because it can be used to create anything from a traditional garden path to a large entertaining area with a more contemporary feel.

In many homes, the garden is now seen as an extension of the living space. That means patios and paved areas need to feel welcoming and visually connected to the property itself. Natural stone helps achieve this because it works well alongside planting, lawn areas, retaining features, and modern landscaping elements.

Whether the aim is to create a quiet seating area, a family patio, or a smart access route around the property, the right paving design can make the entire garden work better.

Why Professional Installation Matters

The appearance of paving is only one part of the finished result. The quality of the installation underneath is what determines how well it performs over time. A properly installed natural stone surface depends on careful ground preparation, the right sub base, good levels, and close attention to drainage.

Without this, even high quality materials can start to move, sink, or lose their finish. That is why professional installation is such an important part of any paving project. When the groundwork is completed correctly, the finished surface not only looks better but also lasts longer and requires less maintenance in the future.

This is particularly important for larger patios and high use areas, where any weakness in the base can quickly affect the look and performance of the paving.

A Smart Investment for Homes in Preston

Natural stone paving is often chosen for its visual appeal, but it also offers real value in practical terms. A well finished patio or paved garden area can improve kerb appeal, make outdoor living more enjoyable, and contribute to the overall presentation of the property.

For homeowners in Preston who want a surface that combines elegance with durability, natural stone remains one of the strongest options available. It offers flexibility in design, a high end look, and the kind of long lasting finish that helps outdoor spaces stay attractive year after year.

Whether used as part of a full garden transformation or as a standalone improvement, natural stone paving continues to be a reliable and stylish way to upgrade the outside of a home.

Bringing Style and Function Together

The best outdoor surfaces combine appearance with practicality, and that is exactly why natural stone paving continues to stand out. It creates clean lines, natural character, and a strong usable surface that supports modern outdoor living. For properties in Preston, it is a solution that feels equally suited to everyday life and long term property improvement.

With the right design, the right materials, and the right installation, natural stone paving can transform an ordinary outdoor area into a space that feels complete, polished, and built to last.

Garden Transformation Project in Kirkham

Date: February 2026
Location: Kirkham
Job Type: Complete Garden Makeover

Garden Transformation Project in Kirkham

Creating a garden that looks impressive, feels practical, and stands the test of time always starts with the right groundwork. That was certainly the case with this recently completed project in Kirkham, where we carried out a full landscaping garden transformation involving aluminium fencing, artificial grass, a resin patio area, retaining walls, and feature lighting.

This was a substantial job that required careful planning from the outset. The existing garden had a number of issues that needed to be addressed before any new surfaces or features could be installed. There was old hedging to remove, failing retaining walls that had come to the end of their life, and large areas of the garden that needed to be fully excavated so that everything could be rebuilt properly from the ground up.

From the very beginning, the focus was on creating a clean, modern, and low maintenance outdoor space that would not only improve the appearance of the property, but also provide a more usable garden for the homeowner throughout the year. Every stage of the project was completed with durability, structure, and finish in mind.

Full Excavation and Site Preparation

As with many major landscaping projects, the most important work often takes place before the final finishes are even visible. In this Kirkham garden, we began by removing all existing hedging and taking out the failing retaining walls that were no longer fit for purpose. The rear garden areas were then fully excavated to allow us to reshape and prepare the site correctly.

This stage was essential because quality landscaping depends on solid preparation. Without the right excavation and base work, even the best materials can fail over time. By clearing the site fully and starting with a blank canvas, we were able to ensure that every new feature would be installed on a strong and reliable foundation.

aluminium fencing kirkham

New Retaining Walls for Strength and Structure

Once the excavation work had been completed, we moved on to installing new retaining walls. These walls were an important part of the overall design, helping to define the different garden areas while also providing the structural support needed across the space.

Retaining walls are often one of the most overlooked aspects of a garden transformation, yet they are vital when it comes to long term stability. In this project, the new walls created a much more secure and practical layout while also improving the appearance of the garden as a whole. They provided the structure needed for the next stages of the installation and helped bring a more polished and finished look to the entire outdoor area.

Aluminium Fencing and Gate Installation

With the main groundwork and retaining structures in place, we then began the installation of the aluminium fencing. This became one of the standout features of the completed project. In total, more than 40 sections of aluminium fencing were used, together with a matching aluminium gate.

Aluminium fencing is an excellent choice for modern garden design because it offers a sleek, contemporary appearance while also being strong, durable, and low maintenance. Unlike more traditional materials, it provides a crisp and clean finish that works especially well in outdoor spaces designed to look neat and modern.

The finished fencing helped frame the garden beautifully and added both privacy and definition to the property. Combined with the gate, it gave the entire project a coordinated and high quality finish.

Artificial Grass Installation on a Large Scale

Another major part of this Kirkham project was the installation of a large artificial grass area measuring around 170 square metres. For a surface of this size, preparation was especially important.

To create the right base, we installed around 30 tonnes of Type 1 MOT sub base. This ensured the area had the strength and stability needed to support the artificial grass properly and achieve a long lasting result. A well prepared sub base is crucial for maintaining an even surface, good drainage, and overall durability, particularly on larger installations.

The artificial grass has transformed the space into a practical and attractive area that can be enjoyed in all seasons. It offers the appearance of a fresh lawn without the ongoing maintenance associated with natural grass, making it ideal for homeowners who want a smart finish with less upkeep.

Resin Patio Area and LED Lighting

To complete the garden transformation, we also installed a resin patio area and surround. Resin is a popular choice for patios because of its smooth finish, modern appearance, and hard wearing qualities. It creates a clean and stylish outdoor surface that complements both traditional and contemporary properties.

In this project, the resin patio worked perfectly alongside the aluminium fencing and artificial grass, helping to tie the entire design together. The result is a garden that feels well balanced, functional, and visually striking.

A further finishing touch came with the addition of LED lighting framing the artificial grassed area. This detail helped lift the overall look of the garden even further, adding definition and atmosphere once daylight fades. Feature lighting can make a huge difference to an outdoor space, and in this case it gave the project an extra level of quality and a more premium finish.

A Complete Outdoor Transformation in Kirkham

This Kirkham project was far more than a simple garden update. It involved full excavation, removal of old and failing features, structural work with new retaining walls, and the installation of multiple premium elements across the space. From the aluminium fencing and gate to the artificial grass, resin patio, and LED lighting, every part of the job was designed to work together as one complete transformation.

The finished result is a smart, modern, and low maintenance garden that offers both practicality and strong visual appeal. It is a great example of how the right preparation, materials, and installation methods can completely change an outdoor space.

Resin Driveway Installation Little Eccleston

Date: February 2026
Location: Little Eccleston
Job Type: Resin Driveway Installation

We completed this resin driveway in Little Eccleston Preston, when we first turned up to the job it was previously a very poorly installed resin driveway. But the customer loved the driveway but knew corners had been cut. On further inspection we realised that the previous driveway had been laid on a totally unsatisfactory base.
So first thing we totally excavated the exsiting driveway, removed everything and then installed a full type 3 mot base (see our faq’s). Then we installed a fully porous no fines concrete sub base.
After this the driveway was ready for the resin surface. The customer chooses a 2 tone colour, part silver part green. We then installed the resin bound system supplied by Vuba resin and the customer was over the moon with the results.

Resin Driveways for Modern Homes Across Preston and the Fylde Coast

Resin driveways have become one of the most popular choices for homeowners who want a sleek, durable, and low maintenance surface that enhances kerb appeal. Using resin surfacing inspired by the Stone Set North West approach, this blog explores why resin driveways are a smart long term investment for properties across Preston, Blackpool, the Fylde Coast, and surrounding Lancashire areas.

What Is a Resin Driveway

A resin driveway is created by blending natural stone aggregates with a high quality UV stable resin binder to form a smooth, seamless surface. Unlike loose gravel or traditional tarmac, resin bound surfacing creates a fully bonded, porous finish that looks refined while offering excellent performance in all weather conditions.

The finished surface is designed to be visually striking while remaining practical for everyday use. It provides a contemporary appearance that suits both modern homes and traditional properties looking for a fresh update.

A close-up view of a smooth, permeable golden aggregate resin bound driveway surface.

The Benefits of Resin Driveways

Resin driveways are known for their clean, modern aesthetic and impressive durability. The seamless finish reduces the risk of weeds, loose stones, and surface cracking, which helps the driveway maintain its appearance for years with minimal upkeep.

One of the key advantages of resin surfacing is its permeability. Water drains through the surface rather than pooling on top, which supports sustainable drainage and helps reduce surface water build up. This makes resin driveways particularly suitable for the North West climate, where regular rainfall can cause issues with traditional driveway materials.

Resin driveways are also highly customisable. With a wide range of aggregate colours and blends available, homeowners can choose a finish that complements brickwork, render, landscaping, or garden features. This flexibility allows for a truly bespoke result that enhances the overall appearance of the property.

Low Maintenance and Long Term Value

A major appeal of resin driveways is their low maintenance nature. The smooth surface is easy to keep clean with occasional sweeping or gentle pressure washing. Unlike block paving, there are no joints where weeds can easily grow, and unlike gravel, there are no loose stones to manage.

Over time, this reduced maintenance requirement can represent excellent value for money. Resin driveways are designed to retain their colour, structure, and performance, offering a long lasting solution that continues to look attractive with minimal effort.

Curb appeal enhancement: Before and after comparison showing a worn tarmac drive transformed into a contemporary grey resin bound driveway.

Ideal for Driveways, Paths, and Outdoor Spaces

While resin driveways are a popular choice, the same surfacing method is also ideal for garden paths, patios, and other outdoor areas. The consistent finish creates a cohesive look across the entire exterior of a property, helping to tie together driveways, walkways, and landscaped spaces.

Because resin surfaces are slip resistant and comfortable underfoot, they are suitable for families, visitors, and everyday use. This combination of safety, style, and functionality makes resin surfacing a versatile option for both domestic and commercial settings.

Why Resin Driveways Suit Homes in Lancashire

Across Preston, Blackpool, Poulton le Fylde, and the wider Fylde Coast, homeowners are increasingly choosing resin driveways for their balance of performance and visual appeal. The ability to cope with variable weather, resist surface damage, and maintain a premium finish makes resin an ideal solution for properties in Lancashire.

Whether upgrading an existing driveway or creating a new entrance, resin surfacing provides a contemporary alternative to traditional materials that can significantly improve the look and value of a home.

Investing in a Resin Driveway

Choosing a resin driveway is an investment in both aesthetics and practicality. With professional installation, high quality materials, and thoughtful design, a resin driveway can transform the entrance of a property and create a welcoming first impression.

As more homeowners discover the benefits of resin surfacing, it continues to set the standard for modern, low maintenance driveway solutions across the North West. Contact us a today to discuss your next driceway enhancement..

Resin or Block paving for your Blackpool home

Resin or Block Paving for Your Blackpool Home?

If you’re planning a new driveway or patio for your Blackpool home, one of the biggest questions is:

Should I choose resin or block paving?

Both options can totally transform the front of your property, boost kerb appeal and add value. But they each have different benefits when it comes to cost, maintenance, drainage and style.

In this guide, StoneSet Resin breaks down resin vs block paving so you can decide which surface is best for your home in Blackpool and the Fylde Coast.

What Is a Resin Driveway?

A resin bound driveway is created by mixing natural stone aggregate with a specialist, UV-stable resin and laying it as a smooth, seamless surface.

Key benefits of resin driveways in Blackpool

  • Fast installation – often laid over existing concrete or tarmac
  • Low maintenance – simple to clean with a hose or jet wash
  • Permeable surface – allows water to drain through, helping reduce puddles
  • Modern appearance – clean, contemporary finish that suits most homes
  • Huge choice of colours – from natural stone blends to bold, modern mixes

For coastal areas like Blackpool, a resin driveway copes well with regular rain and changing weather, while still looking smart all year round.

What Is Block Paving?

Block paving uses individual concrete or clay blocks laid on a compacted sub-base and sand. It’s been a popular driveway choice across Blackpool for many years.

Key benefits of block paving

  • Traditional look – great for older or character properties
  • Easy to repair – single blocks can be lifted and replaced
  • Pattern options – herringbone, basketweave and many other styles
  • Edging details – contrasting borders and features

Block paving can look fantastic when it’s new, but it does come with some considerations for long-term maintenance.

Resin vs Block Paving: Head-to-Head Comparison

1. Kerb Appeal & Style

Resin Driveways

  • Smooth, seamless finish with no weeds growing through joints
  • Modern look that suits new builds and updated family homes
  • Wide range of stone blends to match brickwork, render or landscaping

Block Paving

  • Classic, familiar appearance
  • Can be designed with patterns and contrasting borders
  • Joints can fill with dirt and weeds over time if not maintained

➡️ If you want a clean, modern look that stays smart with minimal effort, resin usually wins.

2. Drainage & Weather Performance

Resin

  • Resin bound systems are permeable, meaning water drains through to the base
  • Helps reduce standing water and surface puddles – a big plus in rainy Blackpool
  • Can help meet SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) requirements

Block Paving

  • Standard block paving is not fully permeable unless special blocks and bases are used
  • Joints can hold water, leading to moss and weed growth
  • Poor installation can cause dips and puddles

➡️ For Blackpool’s wet, coastal climate, a permeable resin driveway is often the more practical option.

3. Maintenance & Cleaning

Resin

  • No joints for weeds to push through
  • Occasional sweep and rinse is usually enough
  • A light jet wash once or twice a year keeps it looking fresh

Block Paving

  • Sand-filled joints can attract weeds and moss
  • May require regular weed treatment and re-sanding
  • Stains from oil or vehicles can be harder to remove

➡️ If you want a low-maintenance driveway, resin is the clear winner.

4. Durability & Longevity

Resin

  • Laid on a stable base, a quality resin driveway is hard-wearing and long-lasting
  • UV-stable resin helps prevent colour fading
  • Ideal for normal domestic traffic and everyday parking

Block Paving

  • Very strong when installed on a solid base
  • Individual blocks can sink or move if sub-base isn’t prepared correctly
  • Weeds, movement and staining can affect appearance over time

➡️ Both can be durable when installed properly, but resin offers a better balance of longevity and appearance with less upkeep.

5. Cost Considerations

Costs can vary depending on size, access and groundworks, but generally:

  • Resin driveways are often similar in price or slightly more than standard block paving on a like-for-like quality job
  • When you factor in lower maintenance and longer-lasting good looks, many Blackpool homeowners find resin offers better long-term value

StoneSet Resin can provide a clear, itemised quote so you can compare options properly for your own property.

Which Is Better for Your Blackpool Home – Resin or Block Paving?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but here’s a simple way to think about it:

Choose resin if you want:

  • A modern, seamless finish
  • Low maintenance and easy cleaning
  • Better drainage and fewer puddles
  • A driveway that keeps its appearance for years

Choose block paving if you want:

  • A more traditional look
  • The ability to lift and change individual blocks
  • Patterned designs with lots of edging detail

Many homeowners across Blackpool and the Fylde Coast are now opting for resin driveways because they offer the best combination of style, performance and value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a resin driveway cheaper than block paving?

Resin and block paving are often similar in price for a good-quality install. However, resin can work out better value long-term because it’s lower maintenance and keeps its appearance without constant weeding or re-sanding.

Will a resin driveway work over my existing concrete?

In many cases, yes. If your existing concrete or tarmac is in good condition, we can often lay resin over the top, saving time and money on groundworks. We always assess the base during a site visit.

Does resin get slippery in the rain?

A professionally installed resin bound driveway includes anti-slip properties and a textured surface. This gives good grip underfoot and for vehicles, even when wet.

How long does a resin driveway last?

A well-installed resin driveway can last 15 years or more, depending on usage and care. Regular light cleaning will help it look its best.

Do I Need Planning Permission for a New Driveway?

Planning a new driveway can be exciting — but it’s important to make sure everything is done by the book. One of the most common questions we get asked at Stone Set North West Ltd is:
“Do I need planning permission to install a new driveway?”

In many cases, the answer is no — but there are a few important rules you’ll want to be aware of, especially when it comes to drainage.

When You DON’T Need Planning Permission

For most homeowners in Poulton-le-Fylde, Preston, the Fylde Coast, and across the North West, you won’t need planning permission if:

✅ The surface area is less than 5 square metres
✅ You’re using a permeable (porous) surface such as resin-bound, gravel, or permeable block paving
✅ Rainwater is directed to a lawn, flower bed, soakaway or drainage channel on your property

If you’re replacing an existing driveway with the same layout and using porous materials, you can typically go ahead without needing any permissions.

When You MAY Need Planning Permission

You might need permission if:

🚫 You plan to cover more than 5 square metres with an impermeable material (like concrete or tarmac) without proper drainage

Why Is Your Driveway Sinking?

A sinking driveway is more than just an eyesore — it can be a real hazard and a sign of deeper structural issues. Whether you’ve noticed dips, cracks, or water pooling in certain spots, it’s important to understand what’s causing the problem and how it can be fixed properly.

At Stone Set North West Ltd, we’ve repaired and replaced countless driveways across Poulton-le-Fylde, Preston, the Fylde Coast, and beyond, and we know exactly what to look for. Here’s what might be going on beneath the surface…

1. Poor Ground Preparation

The foundation of the problem is often… the foundation.

The most common reason a driveway sinks is due to inadequate sub-base preparation. If the ground wasn’t properly excavated, compacted, or layered with a suitable hardcore base (typically MOT Type 1), the weight of vehicles over time will cause it to shift and settle unevenly.

2. Drainage Issues

Water is your driveway’s worst enemy.

If water isn’t draining away correctly — whether due to poor fall (slope), blocked channels, or no drainage at all — it can slowly erode the sub-base underneath your driveway. Over time, this leads to soft spots, sinkholes, and cracking, especially in heavy rainfall or frost.

3. Heavy Vehicle Use

Is your driveway built for the job?

Standard driveways are usually designed for domestic vehicles. If you regularly park heavy vans, motorhomes, or delivery vehicles on a driveway that wasn’t reinforced for that kind of weight, the base can start to give way — especially in older installations.

4. Tree Roots or Soil Movement

Nature always finds a way.

Tree roots growing beneath the surface can push paving upward or disturb the base, leading to dips and cracks. Similarly, clay soils can expand and contract with weather changes, causing uneven movement beneath your driveway.

How to Fix a Sinking Driveway

🔧 Patching or Lifting (Short-Term Fix)

If the damage is minor and limited to a small area, patching or lifting the affected section can provide a temporary fix. However, this doesn’t solve the root cause and often leads to repeated issues.

Full Dig-Out & Rebuild (Long-Term Solution)

The most effective way to solve a sinking driveway is to fully excavate and rebuild the affected area — or the entire surface — with a properly compacted sub-base and professional drainage in place.

At Stone Set North West Ltd, we never cut corners. Our installations include proper dig-out depths, weed membranes, MOT bases, and materials like resin-bound surfacing or block paving, built to withstand daily use and unpredictable UK weather.

Why Do I Have Weeds on My Driveway?

Weeds on your driveway can be frustrating. You’ve invested in your outdoor space, and the last thing you want is to see greenery popping up where it shouldn’t be. Whether your driveway is block paving, tarmac, gravel, or even resin, weeds can still find a way through — but why does it happen, and what can you do about it?

Let’s take a closer look.

1. They’re Not Growing Through — They’re Growing On Top

A common misconception is that weeds push up from deep below the surface. In reality, most weeds on driveways are actually growing on top, not through.

Wind-blown soil, dust, and organic debris can settle in the small gaps between paving stones or on the surface of gravel driveways. This creates just enough of a growing medium for weeds, moss, or algae to take root.

2. Poor Jointing or Cracks

If your driveway has cracked joints, loose blocks, or deteriorating grouting, weeds can start to grow in these weak spots. Block paving in particular is prone to weed growth in the sand-filled joints unless it’s been properly sealed or maintained.

3. Drainage Issues & Standing Water

Poor drainage or surface dips can cause puddles and damp patches, which encourage moss and weed growth — especially in shaded areas. Over time, moisture builds up and creates the perfect environment for invasive growth.

4. Inadequate Base Preparation

In some cases, weeds can push through if the original driveway base wasn’t excavated deep enough or if a proper weed membrane wasn’t installed. This is especially common with older or DIY installations where cost-cutting may have occurred during groundwork.

So, What Can You Do About It?

Regular Maintenance

Sweep your driveway often to remove organic matter, debris, and seeds before they have a chance to grow. Power washing and applying a weed-killer or moss treatment twice a year can also help keep things clear.

Resealing Block Paving

If you have block paving, consider having the joints resealed with resin or polymeric sand. This reduces weed growth and helps lock the surface in place.

Choose a Resin Bound Surface

Resin-bound driveways are fully porous, seamless, and extremely resistant to weeds — making them an excellent low-maintenance alternative. At Stone Set North West Ltd, our installations include high-quality base systems and weed-resistant finishes designed to prevent these issues from the start.

Looking for a Weed-Free Upgrade?

If you’re constantly battling weeds or your driveway is looking tired and uneven, it might be time to consider a more durable, low-maintenance option. From resin driveways to natural stone paving, we offer expert installations across Poulton-le-Fylde, Preston, and the Fylde Coast.
